Hunger: Backpacks for Hunger
Did you know that there are 101,000 area children that are on free or reduced lunch programs at school? The reality for thousands of children is they will face a long weekend with little or nothing to eat.
Be a blessing to 1,200 of the following local metropolitan children:
- Troost Elementary KC, MO – 200 backpacks
- Wheatley Elementary KC, MO – 200 backpacks
- Wendell Phillips Elementary KC, MO – 200 backpacks
- Welborn-200 KC, KS -200 backpacks
- Quindaro- KC, KS- 200 backpacks
- Ridgeview Olathe, KS- 200 backpacks
Because hunger doesn't take the weekend off!
What: Each week, volunteers can fill backpacks, pre fill items into baggies, pick up bagels and deliver backpacks to the schools for the children to take home over the weekend.
When: September, 2010 - May, 2011
Sign-up: See below for various serving opportunities.
Serving Opportunities:
- Pick-up empty backpacks – Tuesdays and some Wednesdays 8am -12pm from Elementary Schools. May require heavy lifting and driving the church's box truck. Sign up online.
- Deliver filled backpacks – Thursdays and some Fridays 8am -12pm to Elementary Schools. May require heavy lifting and driving the church's box truck. Sign up online.
- Pre-fill items into baggies-Every Tuesday 9am -10am with food items in preparation for the fill. We meet at the Leawood campus, west building basement. No need to sign up just show up and help!
- Fill backpacks – Wednesdays /Thursdays various times at Resurrection's Leawood Campus in the West Building. Please see age requirements. Sign up online.
- Pick up bagels and return them to church basement - Monday – Thursday. Costco 119th & Metcalf M-TH 8am. Einstein M-W 135 & Antioch 4pm. Sign up online.
- Pray for the Children - each week as they receive their backpack.
Be an “Angel” by supporting a child with monthly or yearly monetary contributions - $12/month fills a student’s backpack for the entire school year (or $144/year). When you support a child, you will get to select a specific child with a profile and a picture, so you can pray for them throughout the year. Click here to download the EFT Angel Form.
Age Requirements for Children Stuffing Backpacks:
- Children under 5 years are not permitted for safety reasons
- Children with families 5 years and older may attend with parental supervision. One adult per 3 children ratio
- Children’s groups 2nd grade and above are welcome (Sorry, we are unable to accommodate children’s groups under the second grade)
- Youth 14 and older may attend without adult supervision
Special Opportunities for Children’s Groups Second Grade and above:
- We reserve specific fills each month 4-5pm and 5:15-6:15pm for children’s groups (e.g. Brownie troops, Boy Scouts, school classes, etc.)
- Each Tuesday from 4-5pm sign up to pre-fill items in preparation for the backpack fill
NEW THIS YEAR! Peanut Butter Drives for School Community Outreach Service Projects
- Schedule us to speak at your school or group about hunger in KC
- Collect 18 oz jars of peanut butter to go in the backpacks
- Then fill backpacks as a group

Sign Up Online if you are:
- An individual adult
- Families with children 5 years and older
- Adult groups of any kind
Email us if you have a Children’s Group that is interested in:
- Filling backpacks as a children’s group
- Interested in pre filling items on Tuesday’s at 4-5pm
