Hunger: Backpacks for Hunger

 

Provide local metropolitan children at risk of going hungry over the weekend with nutritious, kid friendly food that a child can take home from school on Friday and bring back to be filled again the next week.  Help fill a gap in these children’s lives where food is a concern. Be a blessing!

  • Troost Elementary - 175 children receive backpacks each week (since September 2008). 
  • Ladd Elementary - 210 children receive backpacks each week (since February 2009).
  • Wheatley Elementary - 250 children receive backpacks each week (since July 2009). 
  • Wendell Phillips Elementary - 125 children receive backpacks each week (since September 2009). 

What: Each week, volunteers will fill backpacks for students and deliver them to the school for the children to take home over the weekend. 

When: September, 2009 - May, 2010 (dates are currently posted for sign-up through Mar 2010, dates for Apr and May 2010 will be posted in Feb).

Sign-up: Online to stuff, deliver, or pick-up backpacks; EFT Angel Form to be an "Angel" and donate

Serving Opportunities:  

  • Sort and stuff backpacks – Thursdays various times at Resurrection's Leawood Campus in the West Building
    • 1st Thursdays, 4-5pm reserved for children's groups
    • 2nd Thursdays, 7-8pm
    • 3rd Thursdays, 4-5pm
    • 4th Thursdays, 7-8pm
    • 5th Thursdays, 10-11am  
  • Deliver filled backbacks –Fridays early morning to Elementary  Schools and drive the missions box truck (requires heavy-lifting).
  • Pick-up empty backpacks – Tuesdays in the morning from Elementary Schools, and return them to Resurrection to be filled for the next week, and drive the box truck (requires heavy-lifting).
  • Be an “Angel” by supporting a child with monthly monetary contributions - $12/month fills a student’s backpack for the entire school year (or $144/year), and can be automatically debited from your checking account.  You will be given a specific child's name to pray for them throughout the year when you sign-up to give a recurring contribution (using the EFT Angel Form).
  • Pray for the children - each week as they receive their backpack.

Signing up a Large Group? 

We reserve the 1st week of each month for large groups (e.g. Brownie troops, Boy Scouts, school classes, etc).  We CANNOT sign-up large groups online.   To sign-up your large group, please contact Mary Tostensen at mrtoste@yahoo.com.  Small Groups and Bible Studies are welcome to sign-up online.

Age Requirements for Stuffing Backpacks: 

  • Children under 5 years old are not permitted for safety reasons.
  • Kindergarten and 1st grade may attend with parental supervision.  Sorry no large groups for children under 2nd grade.  
  • 2nd Grade and up, are welcome to attend with their parents, or with a supervised group (with at least 1 adult for every 3 children). 
  • Youth 16 and older may attend without adult supervision.
