Earth Day
The Earth is the Lord's and all that is in it. - Psalm 24:1
At Leadership Institute this past fall, Rev. Adam Hamilton shared an idea we are very excited about. This April, The Church of the Resurrection will "See the Light" as we promote creation care during each of our worship services for Earth Day weekend, April 19 and 20. Worship that weekend will be dedicated to helping our congregation understand the polluting impact we are having on our planet and the role of faithful Christians in leading the way toward better care for God's creation. In our Narthex, we'll have information about our environmental ministry, Earth COR. Other displays will encourage people to consider the value of Energy Star appliances, to support our city's public recycling program and to explore information about wind turbines and rain gardens.
At Leadership Institute, your church expressed interest in hearing more about our plans for Earth Day. You may even be interested in utilizing some of the specific resources we are developing for use in your church. Additional information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks as we fine tune our plans. But today, we want to give you a jumpstart on your own planning, in anticipation that your church might also find these resources useful. Together, we can make a difference!

Resurrection's Earth Day Press Release
- CFL Bulb Media Release (Word), CFL Bulb Media Release (PDF)
- This is a sample just to whet your appetite. You can modify the release and send it to local media to help your church get the word out about how you are raising the banner of environmental stewardship. If your community is like ours, there are people living within sight of your church who wonder why churches aren't more vocal about the need for our society to protect and care for God's workmanship. Make a statement to your own community and reach out to those who are eager to see churches involved in this relevant concern.
Top Ten List
- Top Ten List (Word), Top Ten List (PDF)
- What can members of your own congregation do? How can they get started? We put together a list of simple steps to help Earth-conscious Christians take their first step toward environmental stewardship. The list is packed with simple steps any newly-green person can take to start making a difference right where they live and shop.
CFL Ordering Information
- CFL Ordering Information
- The Church of the Resurrection has ordered 3,500 compact fluorescent bulbs for April 19/20. Our goal is to distribute one bulb to every family in attendance that weekend. Our aim in doing this is to help families succeed at becoming more environmentally conscious by helping them take a simple first step. Each bulb will be given along with a factsheet describing the practical advantages of CFL bulbs and coaching them on the importance of recycling bulbs once they are spent. We were able to secure these bulbs at an affordable cost from a national resource. Find out more if you're considering doing something similar.

- In 2006, The Church of the Resurrection started an environmental ministry to encourage recycling, to educate our congregation and community, and to expand awareness of the need to care for God's creation. This ministry is catching on here at Resurrection and reading more about EarthCOR may spark ideas about starting a ministry at your church too.
Additional resources, such as a sermon outline, CFL fact sheets and a sample newspaper ad will be available on the site by the end of March. So please check back!
