Africa - Churches and Educare Centers
![]() |
Pinetown is an industrial town on the outskirts of Durban, a city of 3 million on the east coast of South Africa. Pinetown Methodist Church has an average worship attendance of 400 and “exists to be a sign of the Kingdom of God in a broken world.” This purpose is fulfilled, in part, through various missions, including a Christian school, a vocational training center, a soup kitchen, a retirement center and ministries to children called “educare” centers. The church is part of the Clerpine Circuit (a cluster of 23 Methodist churches served by 8 pastors).
Nearby, in the impoverished township areas surrounding Pinetown, several Methodist congregations have the potential to make new disciples of Jesus Christ. They are situated in areas that have growing populations, as people migrate into urban areas, and they have a core group of members who are committed to reaching non-religious and nominally religious people. The efforts of these congregations are hampered, however, by the fact that they are meeting in school classrooms, which are too small, and to which they have no permanent claim.
Opportunities to Serve
Church of the Resurrection, along with the members of Pinetown Methodist Church, believes that if we are able to build church buildings for the Methodist congregations meeting in the townships, they will use these buildings as centers for both worship and missions that address the needs of the surrounding communities and lead people to Jesus Christ. Each of these new church buildings will include a drop-in center to serve children who have lost both of their parents to AIDS and are living in one of the growing number of child-headed households. Together with the other churches of the Clerpine Circuit, Pinetown Methodist Church has committed to building one church per year, and Church of the Resurrection is going to help!
