Honduras
El Obraje is a community of approximately 2000 people located about two hours east of Tegucigalpa on the south side of Honduras. We are partnering with the United Methodist church in El Obraje called Rain of Blessings. The Church of the Resurrection will be partnering the church leadership in community health and wellness for clean water (installing family water filtration systems), clean air (building stove pipes to ventilate wood burning stoves), and assisting with preventative medical and dental care. Health problems due to poor air and water within the homes of El Obraje:
- Presently all of the smoke stays inside the homes which creates a great deal of respiratory problems and in some cases eye infections. By building the stove pipe adapters to the wood stoves, this will eliminate most of the respiratory problems and eye infections.
- Both adults and children suffer from parasites due to dirty drinking water. By purchasing and installing water filtration systems, families will drink clean water.
We will also be partnering with Rain of Blessings and other Methodist churches in Honduras to develop clergy and lay leaders through adult discipleship education, including training in Alpha and Sunday School Curriculum.
For anyone that the Lord has called to serve on a mission team, all necessary training will be provided for the trip. Our goal is to build a relationship between the people of El Obraje and the people of Resurrection. All programs will help the people in El Obraje to live a healthier life and become self sustainable.
Partnering Opportunities
Teams that travel to El Obraje in 2012 will participate in programs and activities that may include:
- Education/training – equip lay leaders to envision, plan and organize ministry activities for children and adults. There will be a strong emphasis on recently introduced Sunday school curriculum that will require support throughout the churches in the Methodist community.
- Alpha follow up - Help sustain the recently implemented Alpha course that was initiated in all 14 mission communities.
- Light Construction – build stove pipes and install water purification systems in homes.
- Medical Outreach - partner through health care professionals triaging sick patients, distributing medications/vitamins and performing fluoride treatments. Health education classes are also provided. Physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals are essential as well as non-medical team members.
Medical Missions
Medical outreach teams partner with clinic staffed by government healthcare clinics triaging sick patients, distributing medications/vitamins and performing fluoride treatments. Health education classes are also provided. Physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals are essential; but non-medical team members are also needed to help throughout the week.
